Research paper - Innovation for independent living (by Jean Barclay)

Earlier this year, we commissioned independent research into opportunities for innovation on the theme of independent living. Over 20 people were interviewed via telephone including commissioners, social investors and innovators. Before releasing the final draft, we wanted to know your thoughts in response to the key emerging questions that were coming out of the research – please click here for a reminder.

The research highlights the key challenges to innovation for independent living and identifies the emerging opportunity spaces where unmet needs have yet to be supplied with great innovative ideas. To read the research paper follow this link - we would be really interested in knowing your thoughts and opinions.  If you have any suggestions on other pieces of research you think would be valuable to the work of the Exchange or have any comments please feel free to contact me. I look forward to reading your comments!

I have one question - unless I miss it by skim reading, there do not seem to be a definition of what is meant by independent living? Independent living, for disabled people means not doing everything by yourself but having the choice, having control over what we choose for our lives.

Also Improving Life Chances of Disabled People is not just “in the field of physical disabilities” but covers all disabilities and includes those who do not consider themselves to be disabled.

Unless I read wrong, you said there was no joint up strategy - but it seems to me that the Independent Living Strategy is exactly such a joint up strategy that it is over arching and looks into all aspects of independent living - from housing, to transport to services. And it is a co production with disabled people. Is your research going to involve disabled people? (by this I include service users - disabled and the older generation ) or is it just with commissioners, social investors and innovators? I am aware that they can also be disabled people..I am just curious.
