What is the problem you are working to solve?
Studio+ will help reduce the number of young people in London who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).
It will help support NEET young people back into education, training and employment.
It will help young people to gain qualifications that are vital to their chances of getting into work and being successful there (Key Skills qualifications). The fact that these key skills will be seamlessly embedded into music learning will make them much more attractive and easy to learn about.
It will help build these young people’s self esteem. It will motivate them to make a positive contribution to society and to develop their creative talents. Studio+ will improve local communities’ perceptions of these young people.
How are you going to do it?
Via Studio+, young people will learn Music Industry skills and will learn how to manage events. Key Skills Training in Communication, Application of Number, IT, Working With Others, and Improving Personal Performance will be embedded in all the music learning.
Studio+ will help participants develop professional skills, experiences
and a portfolio/CV. There will be masterclasses where participants can meet/question policy makers and industry
professionals about how to get into creative industries careers. Progression routes will be mapped to FE, university, industry and self
employment.
The music training will take the form of OCN accredited courses using
industry-standard equipment and software to build tracks and record live
music. Distribution and studio management skills will be taught via traineeships.
Event Management courses will be delivered - these will be accredited courses that teach the skills required to stage successful youth-led events. Building on our successful track record
in this area, the programme fosters entrepreneurial and financial
management skills.
The above programmes will be integrated with tasters, residential trips,
showcases, guest speakers, careers information & guidance sessions, work
placements, pastoral and 121 support to get participants ‘job ready’; all
5 key skills will be embedded throughout the programme.
Studio+ will publish a regular ‘Opportunities Bulletins’, collating the many London
youth opportunities Vital Regeneration receives news of on a daily basis. This will be circulated to 100% of participants.
Through a Key Worker, Studio+ will support young people into trainee placements, further leanring, employment and apprenticeships.
Our Key worker will work to identify
barriers to education/employment and will support participants to manage
these including housing, health, finance & family.
We will give participants exposure to positive role models and maximise
opportunities to meet/interact with industry professionals.
We will open up awareness of the range of related careers options available. “I’ve achieved a better understanding of the trades and options available to me in the music industry.” (Spyros, 18, past-student on Studio+).
Studio+ will facilitate an unrestrictive beneficiary fund to
respond to individual needs e.g. travel, childcare, clothing etc. Food
will be provided at each session to incentivise participation and to
support improved nutrition & concentration.
We will provide employment readiness and after-care support; our Employability Advisor will support
participants to create SMART employment/education action plans.
Who will benefit?
14-19 year olds from West London who are NEET or at risk of NEET will benefit from this work. We will target neighbourhoods with extreme NEET levels e.g. within certain ethnic groups in Hammersmith 22.4% of young people are NEET (compared to 8.8% national average).
Many of our beneficiaries will live in dense social housing, experience
overcrowding, will be in temporary accommodation or will live in hostels. Many will be from BME groups, many will have mental-health issues and some will be involved in crime. School will have been an unhappy experience for lots of them, and many will have undiagnosed learning difficulties.
Some will be lone parents. There are drug takers amongst them, and many will
have grown up without positive male role models.
They’ll love making music & films, will be social networking savvy - with
MySpace profiles. They’ll know they can be lazy; many won’t know what to
do with their lives and will desperately want someone they respect to help motivate & orient them.
Most will feel society’s disapproval of them. Studio+ will give them a
chance to demonstrate what they’re innately capable of. All will need key
skills support in order to help them move into work or education.
