The conversation will focus on:

The experiences of the Innovation Exchange so far and its future plans
The rise of ‘innovation brokers’ like the Exchange
The challenge of evaluation
Discussion of a draft tender for an evaluation of the work of Innovation Exchange

Time: 11am-1pm, 15th July
Location: Resource Centre, 356 Holloway Road, London, London N7 6PA

Innovation Exchange describes itself as an honest broker, surfacing opportunities for innovation, helping innovators, investors and commissioners to connect around them and supporting them to collaborate. Interesting, then, that this seems to be part of a broader trend, picked up on by Matthew Horne in a new publication from the Innovation Unit, one of our consortium partners:

“A new type of organisation is emerging within the world of public services. They are known as ‘innovation brokers’. Not a very glamorous title, and not necessarily a title that these organisations would claim for themselves, but they are modelling themselves on intermediary organisations that have existed in other sectors for years – such as innovation and science parks, incubators, accelerators, exchanges, labs and studios.”

On the subject of third sector organisations working in partnership with central and local government, Phil Hope (Minister for the Third Sector) was asked:

“But, in principal, what’s wrong with charities delivering public services? Aren’t you doing exactly the same for welfare reform and helping the long term unemployed into work?”

His reply was:

” Third sector organisations are fantastic at in terms of reaching out to the people who are most vulnerable, in being innovative and we’ve got our Innovation Exchange and extra resources going into building the capacity of the third sector, so that partnership is alive and kicking”.

Thank you again to the many fantastic people who helped to make a success of last week’s Festival of Ideas, which looked at innovation for independent living. At least, it seemed like a success to me, but we would really like your feedback. Please fill in this very brief online feedback form. Whether you attended the event or not, you may also be interested to see some of the materials used on the day or produced on the day. Menka Parekh has already posted the video from our Insight Journey. In addition, David Wilcox has now posted videos from the day showing both presentations from the front and people’s own thoughts and responses. During the afternoon, David also shot countless one-to-one conversations with partcipants, many of which are extremely powerful. You can also see my brief powerpoint from the morning session here, which features data from our surveys of attendees before they arrived and draws on research commissioned earlier this year. And we will post any additional links related to this event here. You can also now read in more detail about some of the areas of opportunity for innovation discussed at this event. Most importantly, this Festival of Ideas is just part of the Innovation Exchange process. We will continue to process the ideas and connections generated on the day, support people to develop them and help people work together to take them forward. And don’t forget, we would be hugely grateful for your feedback . Click here for more information about the Innovation Exchange Next Practice programme and Fund

They say that great innovation comes from the simplest and smallest changes. This got me thinking– uh oh – innovation in relation to ‘ideas’ we do not lack. There are plenty of innovative ideas being born every day and we were lucky to have some of these shared at yesterday’s Festival of Ideas event. But the great ones are the ones that challenge the system or the way that we think.

So why am I bothering asking the question in the subject title? Because for me the Exchange has the potential to work most effectively when there is collaboration between people who are not used to working with each other. It’s about much more than finding the next new thing. It’s also about helping people to work together – the kind of people who seem to be on two parallel roads that hardly ever meet but head in the same direction.

Our research strongly supports this (shortly to be published online – watch the space!). The insights from the Festival of Ideas demonstrated this; commissioners and innovators interested in similar areas openly conversed about their lack of relationship. Collaboration is a key element in the future of the Exchange. And strong collaboration comes from trust. My question is: how do we build trust between people who think they come from different worlds? Something that could be the most powerful ingredient in bringing real innovation that grows.

I was speaking to local innovators who asked me why we had invited them to the festival. They didn’t understand how they fitted into the circle of people that were there. Innovation happens at all levels and in all environments. In some it’s encouraged, and in others it’s feared. Our job was to ensure that there was a diverse environment for people to engage in – so that they could tell us where we went wrong and how can we do better in the future. Building trust is not an easy task, but it can become easier if you tell us what you want us to do to help in this process.

Thank you to all who attended - there will be much more content on the site about the event as soon as we can get it to you. In the meantime, I had an article in the Guardian yesterday, seeking to explain the events by focusing on one of the participants, Stars in the Sky, a dating agency for people with learning difficulties. I hope that they and many other third sector innovators will be encouraged by yesterday and boosted by the connections they made.
